About the project
Recycle Me - is the voice of the trash begging us to recycle it. Dumaguete art project Recycle Me were launched by Pinspired Philippines to promote local recycling and inspire more people go green. The project includes: exhibition of 11 Dumaguete city artists on recycled plastic canvases at the Flying Fish Hostel; art market with free to download poster Zero Waste Alternatives to spread more awareness to local people about types of waste and eco friendly alternatives, videos from Plastic Warrior Dumaguete how local people can reduce their waste and help to make the city cleaner.

Local artists used recycled plastic canvases for their artworks, which were created from recycled plastic sheets made by PRP4IWI and KURE in Tagbilaran city. Plastic waste collected in every barangay were shredded and using heat press machine converted into plastic sheets. They were shipped to Dumaguete city and here at GATXS gallery we turned them into canvases. Each artwork is unique and promotes zero waste living in Dumaguete city. Proceeds from selling artworks will support Plastic Warrior Dumaguete and local environmental programs.

The Felines‘ Recycling Work at Home
by Sarah Jean Ruales
About the artist:
Dumaguete based artist, Sarah Jean Ruales, is honing her skills in painting and design by studying Fine Arts at Foundation University at the same time working as a freelance artist. Her commissioned projects were portraits, wall murals, and 3D art, and she prefers to paint with oils, acrylics, and watercolor but among all those oil suits her treatments well. Her perfectionism yet adventurous character once lead her work at an event designing company in her city which she worked as artist-apprentice of the main designers.

This piece is meant to invite everyone especially the new generations in making products from recycled materials that we have at home. Sweating Out the Sweaters
by Spontak

Wrinkled beyond disbelief
sphynx too cheeky
it grieved amongst friends
over thimbles, crochet needles,
sharp pins once punctured their paws
as they learned to stitch sweaters
sweating out their claws
because they wanted to be clothed —
armor in fleece,
security in ribbons,
stitched by a meowed quip
but with cat-sized scissors.

In My Bubble
by Hersley Casero
About the artist:
I am a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Dumaguete City, Philippines. I am currently an Artist-in-Residence of Foundation University. Being born and raised in Dumaguete, the city has shaped my perspective as a visual artist and is the stage for many of my paintings and photographs. Over the years, I have explored and experimented with a wide spectrum of materials, subjects and concepts. I enjoy collaborating with others through projects like “Ha?: The Laughing Boy Project” which advocates for the freedom of self-expression through art.
Material used:
Acrylic paint on recycled plastic canvas.
About the artwork:
This work is a commentary on the Covid-19 pandemic, and how we have each tried to find our own little piece of serenity and calm amidst all the chaos. Many of us have turned to the arts as a form of catharsis and comfort: music, poetry, film or art. Some of us have turned to nature. Some have turned to friends and others have embraced the solitude.

Softer Than Bottled Kiss
by Spontak

Ship in a bottle
boy in a glass
coral in full throttle
growing at last
we’re stuck inside
to creep past our own eyes,
introspect to dissect lies
we swallowed willingly
from the jar,
promised serenity when son,
all you really needed was
banjo and a soul,
clouds, misted sunshine
mixed in an empty bowl.
Space is where you are,
floating in celestial thought,
a burst of matter
wrought to find calm in
perceived chaos to hear
a chord, a cooing
softer than bottled kiss —
look how the birds
stay on your cork
just to listen.

The Migrant
by Toulla Mavromati
About the artist:
I am a documentary filmmaker and digital content manager for Hersley Casero and Takeshi Maruyama. After completing my degree in ‘Philosophy with Communications & Society’ in 2015, I went on to co-direct the feature-length documentary film ‘El Peso de la Manta’ in Barcelona, Spain. A fellow filmmaker and I then took our skills on the road and spent 10 months traveling Southeast Asia, creating the ‘Finding Amity’ project in which we provided documentary-style video content to 10 different good cause organisations across 4 different countries in order to support them with digitally marketing their noteworthy work within their communities. I have since been settled in the Philippines where I work creating and curating the digital platforms of Foundation University’s two Resident Artists. I am an avid advocate for human and animal rights and the conservation of the environment, and I am passionate about the power of media and the arts to educate and inspire real positive social change.
Material used:
Recycle plastic canvas, recycled denim.
About the artwork:
This work shows one of the Philippines’ most majestic gentle giants: the whale shark. The piece is made entirely from denim sourced from a local ukay ukay store. Much like the whale shark, second-hand clothing has a migratory life. The resilient material that makes up this artwork may have been passed around, squeezed into, sat on and hung out to dry by many on its journey so far… but now my hope for the rest of its days, is that it is quietly admired from a distance.
"I’m in awe of our wonderful environmental advocates and organisations here in Dumaguete. We have so many incredible people doing incredible and creative work towards a better community and ultimately a better planet." — Toulla Mavromati.

Whale Shark Thought
by Spontak

They focused on my size,
my golden eyes, my might
of mouth to grin above
a swell of fish I won’t eat.
They only saw me floating,
exposed fin out of sea.
I can’t hear the gasp of fishermen
retreat —
I have no ears, you see.
He paddles, ladled in
denim colored by water,
coated in vapor, seagull feathers,
cloth that didn’t fit.
I only wanted them to see
my gems, shimmering skin
that I have,
too dazzling in the sun.
I remain sunk below.
I want to know what I sound like.
My Own Eww

by Alma Zosan and Alfred Warren Alcoran
Material used:
Mixed media on recycled plastic canvas.
Contact with the artist:
This artwork is for sale: P8000
Proceeds will support environmental programs by Plastic Warrior Dumaguete.
About the artwork:
This work is a representation of the reality we are in today when it comes to consumption of our necessities and the things we consider as such.
Most of these things bring harm more than good but we justify it because of our towering narcissism. It all goes down to a classic saying, "before you criticize other's mess, you clean up yours”.

I Don’t Need
by Spontak

My own ew
towers into me
greed for pretty lips —
polished nails, caressed
by softly painted drips
of your fingertips —
I breathe for things
I don’t need.
I exhale unnecessity
in golden rings
admist the blackened
blue of blued
dissatisfaction in my grin
grimaced into teeth bared
without smile, without
sound of remorse, redemption, re —
again, anything again but ew —
my pleasure.
It’s all I need.

Left of Lunar Phases
by Spontak
I felt the moon
eater watching the sliver
wane into eclipse
but my apogee
was no pedigree of
a perigee henceforth.
The serpent slipped behind
my right eye to see
left of lunar phases,
past orbiting oligarchs
of dampening gravity
to consume its only
obstinate orb:
assumption.

Cut My Ventricles
by Spontak

He cut my mind
from my heart
noodles splayed carmine
vessels bust blood —
Follow the arrow
of my obsessions,
lost observations
mistaken into passion.
Follow the point
to my ventricle of vice,
to my ventricle of virtue
where no surgeon can
lacerate my inflictions —
I want surgery
on my circulatory
bloody roadmap gone awry
gone to die
gone without turning left
turning right
at duality’s lobed fork in the road.

Catfish Rapture
by Spontak

She sat on a cliff
its green cascading
into waterfall, never
to be autumnal, colored —
opinionated by the stingrays
gliding over leaves,
squirts exposed awaiting
to spritz her glasses.
Then she’ll see spotted
eel catfish descending past
the eclipse, its rapture
of tangled gills still
pulsing the course through
bamboo and its forest,
its thick density too weightless
for her glasses to see.
